When the teenage daughter of graphic novelist Ethan Sacks (Star Wars, Hawkeye, Logan) was hospitalized for depression and suicidal thoughts, his first impulse was to tell a story that encouraged her to live. For Naomi, returning to high school after getting help came with its own fears. Now a thriving college student who uses strategies such as Dialectical Behavior Therapy to manage her mental health, Naomi has collaborated with her father as the co-author of the hit comic book miniseries A Haunted Girl (Image Comics), which combines their real-life experience with a spooky –– and inspiring –– tale of the supernatural.

In this Instagram Live conversation, hosted by AFSP Director of Writing and Entertainment Outreach Brett Wean, Ethan and Naomi are joined by Dr. Marisa Marraccini (Associate Professor of School Psychology at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill), an AFSP research grantee who has studied school re-entry for adolescents after psychiatric hospitalization. Just in time for Halloween, this conversation will offer hope and guidance for parents and young adults, and make getting help and returning to school less scary.
