** We Can't Afford False Solutions Webinar: Centering Environmental Justice in the Fight Against Dirty Hydrogen & Carbon Capture

The unprecedented investments in the clean energy transition from the Biden administration are promising, but some of those vital funds are being funneled into what are known as “false solution” technologies. In this webinar on Tuesday, October 29th at 5:30 PM, we'll explore two of these technologies, hydrogen and carbon capture & sequestration, examining the harms they cause and how communities like ours can advocate against their adoption and siting. ** Community Land Act Town Hall: Keep Our Communities Affordable

Join our fight for more democratic control over land use and development in New York City. As a member of the New York City Community Land Initiative, we are working to pass the Community Land Act ([link removed]) , which is a set of four bills designed to address the city’s housing affordability crisis by placing land in the control of Community Land Trusts and other nonprofit groups committed to community-driven development. Come to our town hall to talk and learn about exciting projects Bronx and Manhattan Community Land Trusts are pursuing, and hear from legislators about their work to pass the Community Land Act. ** VICTORY: Supreme Court Refuses to Halt EPA Limits on Power Sector Emissions
------------------------------------------------------------
As a member of Clean Air for the Long Haul ([link removed]) , a nationwide coalition of environmental justice groups working together to win major federal emissions reductions in the power and transportation sectors, we are pleased to report that the U.S. Supreme Court upheld the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s regulations lowering air pollution and greenhouse gas emissions from the power sector. These included rules to curb methane emissions ([link removed].) from oil and gas operations, mercury and other toxic air pollutants ([link removed]) from coal-fired power plants, and greenhouse gases

** National Lead Poisoning Prevention Week
------------------------------------------------------------
We have a long history of working to eliminate childhood lead poisoning, successfully passing legislation at the city and state levels. We have been focused on this issue because New York State leads the nation in cases of children with elevated blood levels. And Black children living below the poverty line are twice as likely to suffer from lead poisoning as poor white children.
EPA Lowers Lead Dust Standard to "Zero"
At the federal level, we have been advocating for lower lead dust standards. As part of National Lead Poisoning Prevention Week, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) invited Peggy Shepard to speak at its press announcement on the lowering of its dust lead standard ([link removed]) to any reportable level greater than zero – meaning any level of lead current testing methods can detect. This is great news because lead dust is the most likely way people are exposed to lead, which is a dangerous neurotoxin. Peggy was quoted in the Associated Press ([link removed]) story, which has been widely picked up, as well as in the New York Times ([link removed]) .
New York City Lead Dust Report
At the city level, members of the New York City Coalition to End Lead Poisoning, which we belong to, released a Lead Dust Report ([link removed]) on the same day as the EPA announcement. The report explains the dangers of lead dust and makes recommendations on how to address it. Read the Report ([link removed])
New York City Lead Mapping Tool
Another member of the New York City Coalition to End Lead Poisoning, Citizens’ Committee for Children, released an amazing interactive mapping tool to help New Yorkers find lead violations in their community. Just type in your address and you can see if there currently are – or recently have been – any lead violations in your building. The catch is that they can only track violations that have been reported. If testing has not been done, as is all-too-often the case, then you still won’t know if there is lead paint in your building (though the City banned lead paint in residential buildings in 1960). Intimate care products are regulated as cosmetics even though they require special considerations in their formulation to protect the unique vaginal microbiome. That is why, as part of Vaginal Health Week ([link removed]) , we are asking you to support the Women’s Voices for the Earth petition ([link removed]) we have signed urging the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to create official safety guidelines for manufacturers of intimate care products.
