During the event, we’ll be honoring community members who have dedicated their careers to ensuring that every student receives a quality education. Among our esteemed honorees are New York City Council Members Adrienne Adams and Rita Joseph, who are passionate advocates for children, public education, and working families across New York.
Speaker Adams has consistently prioritized public education for children and youth since she entered public service in 2012, advocating for more equitable funding and resources in New York City’s public schools. As a City Council member since 2017, representing City Council District 28, encompassing the Queens neighborhoods of Jamaica, Richmond Hill, Rochdale Village, and South Ozone Park, since 2022, Speaker Adams has promoted the expansion of culturally relevant curricula, including the K-12 Black Studies program. Over the years, Speaker Adams has stood against school closures and co-locations, supported child literacy initiatives, and worked to combat systemic disparities across the city’s public schools, demonstrating her commitment to strengthening educational outcomes for our most underserved communities.
City Council Member Joseph dedicated over 23 years to teaching at P.S. 6, where she focused on supporting English language learners and making a meaningful impact on her students’ lives. After transitioning from the classroom to City Council in 2021, she has leveraged her extensive experience to address public education issues at a system-wide level as the chair of the Education Committee. Representing City Council District 40, which encompasses Flatbush, Prospect Lefferts Gardens, and Kensington, Council Member Joseph continues to prioritize the needs of her constituents by securing vital resources for public schools and tackling systemic inequities.
