Tackling Weight Bias at #HLTHUSA Real stories are powerful in raising awareness of weight bias and obesity stigma. At this month's #HLTHUSA conference in Las Vegas, OAC Board Member Liz Paul spoke on the Impact Stage about her experiences with weight bias and introduced our new bias-free obesity image gallery. Speaking up about personal issues isn't easy, but it can inspire change. Thank you, Liz, for using this opportunity to support the OAC and share your personal story!
| Launch of NEW #StopWeightBias Image Gallery | | | At the national #HLTHUSA conference, OAC officially launched the new #StopWeightBias Image Gallery, designed to challenge harmful stereotypes and shift perceptions of obesity. The free image gallery offers authentic, respectful images for the media and content creators as alternatives to the biased portrayals often seen. Our interactive booth encouraged conference attendees to learn about weight bias in the media, trends over the last few decades, and to share their own experiences. Special thanks to Eli Lilly and Company for sponsoring our booth and helping make this powerful initiative a reality! To view the new obesity image gallery, visit www.stopweightbias.com. Urge Your State Legislators to Support the Treat and Reduce Obesity Act In a recent blog post, OAC gave a fall 2024 update about where the Treat and Reduce Obesity Act (TROA) is at in the legislative process. TROA is gaining support on both sides of the aisle, with more than 130 bipartisan co-sponsors in both the House and Senate! While Congress is in October recess, this is an important time for OAC supporters and advocates to keep reaching out to their members of Congress, as it's a busy time when legislators are working to pass bills. Use the OAC Action Center to send a message to your elected officials, urging them to support TROA! ACT NOW | | | |
Stand Against Weight-based Bullying October is National Bullying Prevention Month. Did you know that research shows students who face weight-based bullying are at greater risk for emotional distress, poor academic performance and long-term health challenges? Despite this, only three states — Main, New Hampshire and New York — provide protections against weight-based bullying in schools. Use the OAC Action Center to call on your Governor and Chief State School officer to to add weight-based bullying protections to school conduct policies! ACT NOW
