My friend,
As I am on the campaign trail, I'm reminded of the great sacrifices that are made every day to defend our country. Today, I hope you’ll take just a few minutes to hear this personal story directly from me.
Nearly four decades ago, during my time at West Point, I came across a book that left a lasting impact on me. It was "Once an Eagle" by Anton Myrer.
This powerful story follows the journeys of two Army officers – one who navigated his career driven solely by personal gain and advancement, and one who navigated his career by putting the well-being of his fellow soldiers above all else.

After graduating from West Point, I went into the Army. It was then that I truly reflected on this book and one very important lesson it taught me.
True leadership is not about you. It is about selfless service to others and to the mission.
