SUPPORT #NOVACANCYCA
#NoVacancyCA is a statewide coalition of organizers demanding the Governor Gavin Newsom, Major Eric Garcetti, and other elected officials use their powers to commandeer vacant hotel rooms for unhoused residents.
|
On May Day, Street Watch supported Davon Brown, an unhoused Echo Park resident, as he took over a vacant hotel room in the DTLA Ritz-Carlton. Davon demanded that Mayor Garcetti commandeer thousands of vacant hotel rooms for himself and other unhoused residents to keep them safe during this pandemic.
When asked about the action, Mayor Garcetti insisted that the city had a hotel room for Davon. In reality, Davon and countless other houseless residents are ineligible for Project Roomkey. The only "room" Garcetti and LAPD provided Davon and two other Street Watch organizers that night was a jail cell.
Check out the Daily Beast article to learn more about the action.

As we learn to live with coronavirus and quarantine, we’ve had to get creative about how we can continue to organize, spread our message, and build our movement. As we continue to organize from our homes, creating a new magazine publication for DSA-LA may be one of the best ways to come together and share our message.
We’re looking for writers, graphic designers, photographers, and anyone else with skills useful for a magazine. We’re also open to suggestions: if you have any ideas for stories we should cover, or know of any other great creatives we should get in touch with, please let us know. In these times it's more important than ever for us to come together and fight for change. If you are interested in joining the team, please fill out this form where you can share your ideas and contact info with us!

Join the Climate Justice and Political Education committees of DSA-LA for a 2 part special event on the dire choice our planet must make: Ecosocialism or Greed & Barbarism. These classes, along with the suggested readings and videos that accompany them, take us from the current state of the climate crisis to the potential not-so-distant futures we face.
Part 1 on Greed & Barbarism is a look at what led to our climate catastrophe and the ecofacisist response that has already begin if we continue with capitalism's "business as usual". Part 2 offers a solution to this impending apocalypse in the form of Ecosocialism, connecting the future we need to build to the current COVID-19 crisis. Each class will include short presentations on the main topics, followed by longer, facilitated group discussions.
Suggested readings for Part 1
