In 2024, Texas ranked dead last in health and education compared to all 50 states. Instead of addressing the alarming underperformance in these areas, Lieutenant Governor Dan Patrick threatens to mimic Louisiana’s bill to implement the Ten Commandments on public school grounds, regardless of a student’s religious affiliation.
Trump shared his support on Truth Social, writing, “I LOVE THE TEN COMMANDMENTS IN PUBLIC SCHOOLS, PRIVATE SCHOOLS, AND MANY OTHER PLACES, FOR THAT MATTER.” This wave of Christian nationalism is also sweeping through Utah and Oklahoma, where lawmakers are plotting similar legislation.
Moreover, Texas ranks 43rd in child well-being. Statistics show that 19% of children currently live in poverty, 70% of fourth graders lack reading proficiency, and 74% of eighth graders are behind in math. Not to mention, Texas has the highest rate of uninsured children in the nation, and limited access to mental health care.
Poverty and a lack of secure employment burden Texans daily. The insufficient free lunch programs and school funding—particularly for vulnerable communities— additionally restricts families from accessing immediate support that could alleviate some of their economic hardships.
The lack of funding, care, and action from conservative extremists adds up. We must prioritize the interests of everyday Texans. With one of the lowest rates of political participation and civic engagement in the country, it’s time to take action for our working-class families. Let’s turn the page together and make our voices heard in the upcoming election!
