Welcome to this week in Seattle DSA!
Last week, three Democrats on the Seattle City Council shelved the Tax Amazon bill, blocking discussion on the need for COVID-19 relief and green, affordable housing. We’re angry: our city’s 100,000 lowest-income residents urgently need the immediate COVID-19 cash relief that this bill would provide. As we emerge from this pandemic, we need social housing and a Green New Deal to rebuild our society with union, living wage jobs—and the wealthiest corporations need to pay for it.
Since the Council is delaying, we are ramping up pressure on them by preparing to take this matter directly to the voters, which may ultimately be required. It’s full steam ahead to win a ballot initiative to tax Amazon and fund Green New Homes! Winning a corporate tax for green housing is not only vital for Seattle’s working class; it’s also an important step toward winning a Green New Deal. This is how we build our power, get organized, and raise expectations!
Now is the time to get involved: come to the phone-bank on Tuesday and Action Conference on Saturday (see below). Check out our Green New Homes campaign to learn more.
