MPAC Calls on DHS to Establish a Humanitarian Parole Program for Lebanese Citizens

Today, MPAC submitted a letter to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), urging them to take further action in response to the worsening crisis in Lebanon. While we commend DHS for granting Temporary Protected Status (TPS) to Lebanese nationals, this is only a first step. Given the escalating violence and humanitarian catastrophe, we are calling on DHS to establish a Humanitarian Parole program for Lebanese citizens fleeing the ongoing conflict.

The Israeli ground invasion and relentless aerial bombing of Lebanon have already claimed the lives of thousands and displaced over 1.2 million people. Just last week, Israeli forces bombed the southern city of Nabatieh, killing 16 people, including the mayor and several members of a U.N.-affiliated relief team. According to the United Nations, more than 25% of Lebanon’s population is under evacuation orders including large sections of Tyre, a historic city now targeted by numerous airstrikes. Critical infrastructure, including healthcare facilities, mosques, and residential areas, has been reduced to rubble.

Lebanon is facing a severe shortage of food, fuel, and medical supplies, and the situation is deteriorating with each passing day. This assault on innocent civilians continues to expand, and the humanitarian crisis is becoming increasingly dire.

We believe the United States has both a moral and humanitarian obligation to act. The U.S. has historically provided humanitarian leadership in times of crisis, and Lebanon is in desperate need of the same support today. By establishing a humanitarian parole program, the U.S. can provide temporary refuge to those fleeing death and destruction, giving them the chance to find safety and rebuild their lives.
