Free Speech For People issued a letter today to U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland and Chief Corey Amundson with the Public Integrity Section of the Criminal Justice Division at the U.S. Department of Justice, urging them to investigate the America PAC and Musk for violating federal law that prohibits anyone from paying people to register to vote.
Although the Department of Justice has already issued a letter to the America PAC warning of a potential violation, this will not be enough to stop Musk from continuing to violate election law even as voting is already underway. Musk has a long history of bending or breaking the law and typically gets away with it because government regulators fail to use their maximum enforcement powers against him. The DOJ’s warning must be coupled with a prompt, thorough investigation and appropriate enforcement action, including, at a minimum, an immediate demand that Musk and America PAC cease and desist offering or making payments in violation of federal law.
No one—regardless of their wealth—should be allowed to openly defy federal law in order to buy voters or voter registrations. It is imperative that the America PAC’s lottery be promptly investigated and appropriate action be taken to enforce the law and protect our elections.
