“While each of us is primarily responsible for achieving our American Dream,
state policymakers can make it easier by reforming policies that restrict
opportunity.”
Hey John,
If you remain optimistic about achieving your American dream, you are in good
company.
According to economist Adam Millsap, 67% of respondents believe they have
achieved or are on their way to achieving their American Dream.
But one group is not so sure. Among people aged 18 to 44, only 41% still
believe they can achieve the American Dream.
At AFP, we believe the American Dream is as unique as each American. For some,
it’s buying a home and starting a family. Others dream of traveling, achieving
athletic milestones, or owning a business. Whatever your dream, we’re here to
help every American pursue it on their own terms.
What are the barriers to the American Dream?
For many Americans, building assets are key to their version of the Dream.
However, skyrocketing housing costs have made it nearly impossible for many
first-time buyers to afford a home.
But it need not be this way. Local land-use regulations like minimum lot
sizes, bans on duplexes, and strict parking requirements are driving up costs.
Excessive regulations are also making it harder for people to find meaningful
jobs that allow them to afford to pay a mortgage.
Take Rudy Carey, a Virginia resident who was barred from a job as a substance
abuse counselor because of an earlier conviction, even though he had completed
rehab and extensive training. His story is just one of hundreds where people
are blocked from careers due to unnecessary occupational licensing laws.
At AFP, we believe there are as many American Dreams as there are Americans.
We also believe that policymakers shouldn’t make it harder for people to
achieve their goals.
You can help unleash the power of individuals to make the economy work better
for everyone.
