President's Message

The Wisconsin Office of Children's Mental Health's newest fact sheet, School Nurses and Youth Mental Health amplifies the role of the school nurse in bridging health and education in schools, promoting positive behavioral health, using assessment skills to identify students at risk for behavioral health needs and collaboration to provide critical links to prevention, early identification, intervention, and referral for behavioral/mental health concerns. Their latest Showcasing Solutions publication highlights what school nurses do, the need for more in our schools, and how two school districts are working on school nursing solutions to promote student behavioral and mental wellness.

As school nurses, we need to identify, practice, and document the mental and behavioral health interventions we provide with intention. We must also be part of the school-based mental and behavioral health teams with sufficient funding for the services we provide. School nurses are the sentinels of mental and behavioral health for schools. Embrace that role with confidence for yourself and the students you serve.
