In the world's richest country, at least 30 million have filed for unemployment benefits and nearly 70,000 have died due to the coronavirus. Meanwhile, its wealthiest citizens have made nauseating profits. "Between March 18 and April 10, 2020, U.S. billionaire wealth increased by $282 billion," according to a report by the Institute for Policy Studies. Since the beginning of this year, Jeff Bezos' fortune alone has swollen by roughly $25 billion.

Before the virus entered its borders, according to Fintan O'Toole, the United States had ample warning, "the world’s best concentration of medical and scientific expertise, effectively limitless financial resources ... and most of the world’s leading technology corporations." Yet the country is now a gruesome shambles, its virus-stricken population accounting for a third of the world's, its economy plummeting into depression. What explains this tragic irony?

This goes deeper than Trump. "The current pandemic," it seems, "is exposing our central economic and social reality: Extreme wealth inequality has become America’s 'pre-existing condition.'"
