Hi John,

When I was elected to the Assembly, I promised to work every day to change our district for the better. Even while running for Congress, I made sure to keep that promise to my constituents.

This past year, I passed several laws that help create affordable housing, protect California’s wildlife, support families facing medical debt, and much more.

Here are a few I’m especially proud of:

The Room to Roam Act (AB 1889) helps protect wildlife by requiring local governments to plan with nature in mind. California is one of the richest biodiversity hotspots in the world and the most populous state in the nation. Animals need space to move freely between habitats, and this bill requires local governments to consider and minimize impacts to wildlife movement and habitat connectivity in their land use planning.

Making Homeownership Easier for Low-Income Families (AB 1868) makes sure that affordable homes bought by low-income families are taxed fairly. There has been confusion about how to assess property taxes on affordable housing that is offered for sale to low and moderate income individuals. We partnered with Habitat for Humanity on AB 1868 to establish clear and consistent statewide rules, ensuring first-time, low-income homebuyers don’t pay more than they should.

Protecting Families from Medical Debt (AB2297) corrects a loophole in state law that allows debt collectors to place liens on patients’ homes to collect unpaid medical bills. AB 2297 stops this from happening and makes sure low- and moderate-income families are protected from losing their homes over medical debt. The bill also improves patient access to financial assistance.
I’m proud to have passed these bills and more this year. I’ll keep fighting to improve the lives of families, protect our environment, and ensure fairness for all. But with the election coming up soon, I need your help to bring my record of effectiveness to Congress.

Can you chip in whatever you can today to support this work and help keep a real, progressive fighter in CA-30?

Thank you for your support,

Laura
