John, it’s Mark.
Take a look: This kid is the son of working parents. Two cops from New Jersey.
He grew up to become a pilot in the U.S. Navy. He flew 39 combat missions in Desert Storm.
He and his twin brother were selected as astronauts. He flew four missions in space and commanded the space shuttle twice.
In 2011, his wife, Congresswoman Gabby Giffords, was shot in Tucson.
He retired from the Navy and NASA, and his mission turned from service to our country to caring for his wife.
But Gabby’s example stuck with him. And in 2019, he took on a new mission. He ran for Senate, and won. In 2022, he ran for a full term. And again, he won.
That’s my story. My American Dream. It’s a story that can only happen in the United States of America.
This November, we find ourselves at a crossroads. Our country could fall back to Trump, which puts our democracy itself in incredible peril.
Ultimately, our democracy is what enables us to pursue the American Dream. It allows us to worship freely, to find a job without fear of discrimination, to start a business and know that you’ve got an equal shot at success as anyone else if you’re willing to work hard at it. In a democracy, the government works on behalf of the people, not in service to just one man. It protects us, it supports us when we need help, and it provides the kind of opportunities required to chase dreams.
That’s what I believe. And to me, that’s worth fighting for. I swore an oath to defend our Constitution when I joined the Navy. That is an oath I honor, even today.
We’ve got less than two weeks until the election. I’ll be working nonstop to elect Kamala Harris and Ruben Gallego in Arizona, as well as a whole slate of pro-democracy candidates up and down the ballot.
To make sure that our democracy endures for our kids and our grandkids, I’m asking for your help.
