Dear John,

As we settle into the new school year, Playworks partner schools are welcoming a new group of student leaders into our Junior Coach Leadership Program. These fourth and fifth grade students, identified by their teachers for their leadership potential, come from all walks of life and personalities.

Take Nicholas, for example. His teacher saw leadership potential not in his outspokenness, but in his quiet intelligence and kindness. Despite being shy and small for his age, Nicholas found his voice through the Junior Coach program.

“I have watched Nicholas begin to break out of his shell and take on more of a leadership role,” said Coach Tory. “He wears his purple shirt like armor, and when he puts on the shirt he finds the voice he didn't know he had.”

With the ongoing training and support from Coach Tory, Nicholas’ growth extends beyond the playground:

- He speaks up more in class.
- He connects better with his peers.
- He leads with a beaming smile.

Thank you for helping us nurture leadership in all students, regardless of their starting point.

Play on,

Elizabeth Cushing
