“Like many people in the U.S., Jonny Arenas and his husband have seen their lives turn upside down. Both lost their jobs when the coronavirus pandemic shuttered much of their city, and they were hoping that a bank deposit from the federal stimulus fund to help struggling families would cover their rent and bills.”
They never got one.
That’s because, even though Johnny’s husband was born in Seattle, Johnny is an undocumented immigrant from Mexico. The CARES Act specifies that neither one may receive relief because they file their taxes together.
More than 1.2 million American citizens have an undocumented spouse, which means almost 2.5 million Americans could be ineligible for federal relief aid. They shouldn’t be punished for who they love. Please, speak out with us now:
