John --
When we think of November elections, we
usually think about the candidates on the ballot. But, there are other
things to vote on this year.
That's right - there are 9 major
ballot measures this year that could reshape the way we vote,
impacting more than just this election cycle. Ranked-Choice
Voting and Open Primaries are up for voters to decide on in
five statewide contests and four city-level races on November 5th.
The Forward Party believes that
government should be responsive to the needs of the people, and these
election reforms all move us in that direction. These reforms take us
one step closer to true equal representation across the country. Our
friends over at FairVote have a great rundown of them.
This Year's Critical Ballot Initiatives
Statewide Initiatives
-
Colorado - Proposition 131 would bring Open Primaries
and RCV to the state. If this passes, CO will become the largest state
in the nation to use RCV.
-
Idaho - Proposition 1 will implement Open Primaries
and RCV statewide. 94,000 Idahoans signed petitions to get this on the
ballot.
-
Nevada - Question 3 will implement top-five open
primaries statewide. Nevada requires citizen-initiated constitutional
amendments to pass a statewide vote two consecutive
elections, and this has already passed in once in 2022, so this
is the final year!
-
Oregon - Measure 117 will implement Ranked Choice
Voting statewide in Oregon. It was sent to the ballot by Oregon's
legislature, which is the biggest step ever taken by any state
legislature on RCV.
Citywide Initiatives
-
Washington, D.C. - Initiative 83 would create Open
Primaries and RCV for all of DC elections, allowing their independent
voters access to primary voting for the first time in their
history.
-
Richmond, CA - Measure L would implement RCV in
Richmond, the 9th California city to improve its voting in this
way.
-
Oak Park, IL - Oak Park residents will vote on RCV
this November, looking to follow their fellow voters in Evanston who
adopted RCV a few years ago.
-
Peoria, IL - A non-binding RCV measure is in place in
Peoria, asking voters if RCV should be adopted for state and federal
elections.
Anti-RCV Measures
-
Alaska - Opponents of Alaska's recent change to a
"top four" style election are running a campaign to reverse the
state's decision after just one cycle. 85% of Alaskans find RCV simple
and 62% say they like the election system.
All of these ballot measures are
transformational for our elections. If they all pass (and we defeat
the anti-RCV measure in Alaska), we'll more than double the number of
Americans that use RCV each year, and we'll substantially increase the
number of voters have a say in their elections by increasing the
number of states with Open Primaries.
The creation of a better government is
within our grasp. Follow the link below to find out how you can
