John, Governor Newsom has ordered California state agencies to remove groups of houseless people on state land. This decision comes directly from a Supreme Court ruling allowing cities to enforce bans on sleeping outside in public spaces—a direct move to further criminalize houselessness.
Join us in calling on Governor Newsom to stop this destructive and inhumane decision by sending a letter directly to his office.
This is a slap in the face, especially after Governor Newsom killed two bills that would implement a reparations package.
Further criminalizing houselessness is not the answer. We know that Black people make up 13% of the U.S. population, but account for 37% of the houseless population.
This staggering overrepresentation of Black people who experience houselessness is not an accident. It’s not something that happened overnight. It is a direct symptom of white supremacy and the systemic and institutional anti-Blackness that is in the fabric of the U.S.
Black people in the U.S. have been forced to grapple with structural discrimination—experiencing the highest rates of poverty, unemployment, low wages, health disparities, incarceration inequities, and so much more.
This is a direct result of centuries of anti-Black policies and practices and violent white mob attacks on Black communities. Without reparations, the structural discrimination that purposely holds Black people back will continue to thrive—it’s something we simply refuse to accept.
Unless we address the root cause, we will never truly be free, and Black people will never be able to thrive.
Food is essential. Housing is essential. Health care is essential. Implementing reparations will help Black people have equitable access to these after decades of barriers.
Tell Governor Newsom that this is not the way to address houselessness and this is not the way forward. We won’t accept his inhumane actions.
In solidarity,
