October 23, 2024

Welcome to The Lighthouse ([link removed]) , the weekly email newsletter of the Independent Institute covering politics, economics, current events, and everything in between.

Dear Readers,

On Monday, we celebrated the third annual Encryption Day, which falls on October 21st. This “holiday” is an opportunity to raise awareness about the importance of technologies that protect communications and sensitive information, as well as the potential risks of weakening such technologies.

Although Encryption Day is a recent addition to the calendar, big government’s attempts to surveil private communication has a long, long history. That history even goes back to … Mary Queen of Scots?

Indeed, Mary Queen of Scots. I explain further in this week’s article. Additionally this week, Craig Eyermann discusses the troubling effects of America’s national debt for the U.S. economy. Francis Crescia highlights the growing discontent in Canada, citing a sluggish economy, rising crime, and increasing debt. President Graham Walker and Senior Fellow Williamson Evers discuss AI deepfakes, hurricanes, port strikes, and hate speech in the latest Independent Outlook.

Thanks for reading.
