In the South, voter suppression and anti-worker laws go hand in hand. Why? Because rich CEOs and executives want to keep workers like you and me from exercising our power – whether that's at the ballot box or through a union.
I'm committed to winning for workers across the South. That's why I'm organizing and that's why I'm voting. Both are ways we flex our power, build our communities, and move forward together. We organize every day and we are not stopping, but we only have 17 days left to vote and win this election. I'll be voting and my coworkers, friends, and family will too. We know elections alone don't win the changes we need, but can shape the rules that make it easier (or harder) for workers to win power. For generations in the South, racist politicians and their corporate allies have done everything they can to keep working Black and brown folks like me down. From Jim Crow era poll taxes and "right-to-work" laws to modern-day voting roll purges and union busting, they've tried to keep us from fighting for what we deserve.
But we're not going to let them keep us from speaking up and out. We're fighting back – and one of the ways is by voting. Check your voter registration and make a plan to vote for pro-worker candidates NOW! No matter what state you live in or what industry you work in, now is an important time to hold our politicians accountable and make our voices heard.
Voting is important, especially when growing worker power is at stake in this election. But it's just one tool that we can use to fight for the things we deserve. That's why we're organizing all across the South – whether or not it's an election year.
Our organizing has made a huge difference for workers like me. We've won raises for thousands of Waffle House servers, a $20/hr minimum wage in CA, and a seat at the bargaining table for Starbucks workers. Those are victories we couldn't have won without worker organizing.
