Happy Mother’s Day, friends!
Today is a special day to celebrate all the mothers, grandmothers, and parent-figures out there raising their children during this difficult time.
As schools and businesses remain closed, mothers across the country are adapting to this new environment working from home, and taking care of children. Some mothers are out of work and worried about how they will make ends meet.
I know firsthand how hard this can be. As a single mother of two boys, I remember the hardships I faced. I relied on food stamps to put food on the table and I brought my kids with me to class in college because I could not afford childcare.
I often looked to my own mother, Mildred P. Massey, for inspiration during hard times. She grew up in the segregated South when very few African American women had access to education, housing, and basic freedoms.
It was her sacrifices and commitment to giving me and my siblings a better life that carried me through those difficult moments.
Every day in Congress I fight in her honor. Whether it’s equal pay, paid family leave, universal childcare, or protecting reproductive rights, I carry her legacy in everything I do.
Today and every day, our mothers are the bedrock of our communities. They are on the front lines of this pandemic making sure children are safe and healthy. Join me in honoring all the mothers who are working, fighting, and doing everything they can to make the world a better place.
Thank you, mothers, for all that you do.
In solidarity,
Barbara Lee
