When Beatrice first arrived at the ASPCA, her body was in “survival metabolism” – she was literally wasting away as her body used its own tissue for nutrition. Dr. Laura Niestat, an ASPCA Forensic Veterinarian, placed Beatrice on a specialized re-feeding diet and vitamin therapy to slowly reintroduce food to her body. After two months in our care, Beatrice gained over 53% of her body weight.
“This was a lot,” Dr. Niestat said. “Often, emaciated dogs gain about 30% to 35% of their intake weight before reaching an ideal body condition. Even after gaining 16 pounds, Beatrice still had a few more to go.”
Our medical and behavior experts continued to work on Beatrice’s health, and 8 weeks later, Beatrice was able to go to a foster home to continue her recovery. Beatrice’s inspiring recovery and path toward healing is a direct result of the dedication and generosity of animal lovers like you. |
