The Mental Health Parity and Addiction Equity Act (Parity Act) requires most health plans to cover mental health and substance use treatment the same way they cover treatment for any other disease, but millions of families still struggle to get coverage for needed treatment.
Here are three letters you can send to your members of Congress encouraging them to pass legislation to strengthen insurance coverage for substance use services.
- Demand equitable insurance coverage for addiction treatment ([link removed] ) – The Parity Enforcement Act would provide additional tools for the federal government to enforce the Parity Act, allowing the Department of Labor to investigate and levy monetary penalties against plans violating parity.
- Expand insurance protections and integration for mental health and addiction care ([link removed] ) – The Better Mental Health Care for Americans Act would address several barriers to care by extending parity requirements to Medicare and Medicaid fee-for-service plans, ensuring accurate provider directories in Medicare Advantage plans, increasing reimbursement rates in Medicare and Medicaid, and promoting integrated behavioral health care.
- Expand addiction provider coverage and improve accuracy of provider directories ([link removed] ) – The Behavioral Health Network and Directory Improvement Act would:
- strengthen network adequacy standards for behavioral health providers to address “ghost networks” (providers listed in the plan directory are not accepting new patients or are no longer participating in the network) and inadequate networks
- establish programs to educate and assist consumers
- require standards for parity in reimbursement rates for mental and physical health services to improve network participation.
