John,

When I was three years old, my mother became the breadwinner for our family. As I watched her scrape to make ends meet, take care of me, and fight for her community, I learned from a young age that women can lead anywhere and do it well.

My mother was an amazing role model to me of what it meant to always work for the people around you, and the lessons she taught me provided me the basis of my life’s work as a social scientist.

It’s because of her that I fight for policies that build an America that provides opportunity for all, safeguard our environment for generations to come, and guarantee civil rights and human rights to everyone.

Thank you to all the moms working hard for their families, as well as the caretakers, single fathers, and role models out there. Today is your day. I am personally grateful to all of you for the leadership role you play every day in raising our next generation of teachers, nurses, doctors, small business owners, manufacturing workers, artists, scientists, farmers and ranchers, community volunteers, advocates, and activists.

I promise I will work hard for more opportunities and a better future for you and your families.
