Dear John –

Today, mothers impacted by gun violence will wake up, not to breakfast in bed, but to empty chairs, forgotten toys, and memories of their precious children killed by gun violence.

These moms, many of whom I have gotten to know personally over the last 20 years, are members — not by choice — of a club no one wants to join. A club of parents who have had to bury children killed by someone who never should have had access to a gun.

While these moms had no choice in joining this club, many of them did choose to join a movement — the Million Mom March. On Mother’s Day exactly 20 years ago, the Million Mom March mobilized in Washington, D.C., and across the country. At the time, it was the largest protest against gun violence in American history. It wasn’t partisan. It wasn’t run by professional lobbyists. It was a grassroots group of women who fought for a safer America for their children and their children’s children.

I’ll never forget being at the Million Mom March with my own mother. Now, 20 years later, after the Million Mom March merged with Brady, I have the immense honor of helping lead this movement. But like so many mothers, I’m discouraged that we’re still here, still fighting for something as simple as the ability for our children to grow up without fear of being shot.

Today, one man — Mitch McConnell — stands between us and the changes we need to create a safer America for our children. No matter how many shootings and how many children and loved ones are killed, McConnell has refused to bring forward gun safety legislation. This cannot go on.

That’s why I’m personally asking you: Will you join me in sending a message to Mitch McConnell demanding he take action to prevent gun violence?
