I won’t lie: Trump running neck-and-neck in the polls with Harris is disturbing. There are millions of people planning to vote again for a wannabe dictator.

But I have seen firsthand that our democracy is facing a bigger crisis than Trump. I think the biggest problem we’re facing in our political system is hopelessness.

Hopelessness is exactly what empowered Trump to win in 2016. And if we don’t address it now, it could help usher him into the White House again in November.

That’s why the work we’re doing at Leaders We Deserve is so essential. By supporting young, bold progressives running for office across the country, we are giving the younger generations hope for the future — and a reason to vote.

The candidates we’re supporting — from Nate Douglas in Orlando, Florida to Anna Thomas in Pennsylvania — are the answer to hopelessness.

Our candidates aren’t afraid to stand up and fight for our values on the issues that matter most to young people, like reducing gun violence, addressing the climate crisis with meaningful solutions, and defending the right to an abortion.

And they are doing more than just keeping the GOP at bay. They are charting a path of progress in our state legislatures and building a bench of young leaders who will undoubtedly make a mark on the national stage in the future. Think about this: One of our candidates could very well be running for President one day!

We are giving voters a reason to believe that participating in our elections is worth it when they see candidates who look and think like they do running for office, candidates who share their unique lived experiences and forward-thinking vision.

And we’re electing the next generation of leaders everywhere, all across the country, because we know that no single person is coming to save us.

Our representatives in the State House are just as important as who is in the White House. We have to elect like-minded leaders at every level who will work with us to ensure a better future. And that’s why we’re so committed to this work.

I understand the concern for our democracy, but I am convinced that supporting progressive candidates from the younger generation is one of our best weapons in the fight to save it. We can only defeat hopelessness with a reason for hope.
