We’re fighting to fix anti-democratic Imagine this: North Carolina was an under-the-radar battleground state this summer. All that changed after Republican gubernatorial candidate Mark Robinson’s statements on an adult website about being a “Black Nazi” came to light — shifting the momentum in the race toward Democrat Josh Stein. But at the NDRC, our eyes have been trained on the state because of a different outrageous candidate:
The Republican majority on the state supreme court has already had a massive impact on the state: The court removed constitutional guardrails on extreme partisan gerrymandering, it brought back a voter ID law, and it disenfranchised people with felony convictions. That’s why we’ve endorsed Justice Allison Riggs as a Democracy Defender to strengthen the pro-democracy leadership on this massively influential court — and to avoid seating yet another extreme partisan voice on the court.
So much gets decided by under-scrutinized state supreme courts in North Carolina and beyond. Right-wing Republicans have worked for decades to install partisan justices who will use the power of their position to tilt maps, and policy, in their ideological direction — a trend that only got worse under Trump and his MAGA allies. We can see those consequences come to life in the decisions made by the North Carolina court. We must ensure we do everything we can to support Democracy Defenders in North Carolina and across the country — to stop extreme attempts to weaken our democracy and keep fighting for fairness. Thank you, Ted Corcoran P.S. If you’d like to receive more updates like this about North Carolina — or another battleground state — you can adopt one here!
