Hi John,

Mother’s Day is a special holiday. Today, I am thinking of my own mother who passed away 10 years ago, the day after Mother’s Day. When I was a kid, my mom loved to celebrate Mother’s Day each year by having us work in her garden, planting that year’s annuals -- pansies, zinnias, and marigolds.

When my kids were still at home, they would bring me breakfast in bed as part of our tradition. Now that they are grown and out of the house, today I am grateful to get to video chat with Anna and Grace to see their smiling faces and enjoy a long catch up.

Like everything else, Mother’s Day is different this year. The COVID-19 crisis has without a doubt asked more from all of us, and in many different ways, mothers across the country have stepped up. Many continue to balance the usual routines of keeping their children busy, cooking meals and snacks, and making sure that every tooth is brushed before bedtime -- but now, many are taking on additional responsibilities.

With schools closed across the country, mothers are playing the role of teacher now, too. Some do all this while still working their own jobs to provide for their families. My heart is especially with those who serve as healthcare workers who must be away from their children to keep their families safe during these times.

Today -- and every day -- let's thank the mothers in our own lives and those across the country who are taking heroic actions to protect their families and our society.
