Hi John, it’s Wisconsin Governor Tony Evers. I’m very grateful to have had this team’s support as a Democracy Defender in 2018 and 2022, and I’d like to talk about what you helped make possible.
Earlier this year, I was proud to sign new state legislative maps into law, giving Wisconsinites an opportunity to finally elect leaders who will represent their interests. Democrats now have a real chance at flipping the state assembly this fall — our best shot in a generation. That’s why I’m so happy to hear that you’ve adopted Wisconsin as a part of the NDRC’s “Adopt a State” program.
It won't be easy — but the most important things never are. Will you make a contribution today to help my friends at the NDRC elect more Democracy Defenders like me across the country? [[link removed]]
A little backstory: For decades, Wisconsin had seen some of the most brazen attempts to manipulate maps for Republicans who have been desperate to hold on to power. In 2018, the GOP won 64% of the seats in our state legislature — despite only winning 46% of the vote.
That same year, the people of Wisconsin said they had enough of Scott Walker's special interest-backed agenda by electing me by just 30,000 votes. While a lot of work by a lot of different people and organizations went into that win, I wholeheartedly believe it would not have been possible without the support of the NDRC.
But Walker wasn't done quite yet. On his way out of office, he signed Republican-backed legislation that stripped our administration of executive authority before I even took office.
Through all of this, the National Democratic Redistricting Committee never backed down. They doubled down.
With your support, the NDRC spent years investing time and resources to help break the long-held iron grip conservatives had on the Wisconsin Supreme Court. And as of last year, we finally have a fair and impartial majority on the Court, not a rubber stamp for right-wing policies. After the Court struck down our unconstitutional maps, the legislature passed my fair maps proposal and I was proud to sign fair maps into law.
The days of partisan gerrymandering in Wisconsin are over. This grassroots movement helped make our new, fair maps possible for Wisconsin, and I can’t thank you enough for all the hard work you put in to get us over the finish line.
The NDRC had my back — and now, we need to have theirs. Make a donation today to help the NDRC end map manipulation in states like Wisconsin: [[link removed]]
