Hi team,

Today is Mother’s Day, and with everything going on it’s easy to recognize that this one might be more bittersweet than usual. The COVID-19 outbreak has rocked all of our worlds. Not only are we spending this holiday apart from our loved ones, many of us know someone who is sick, hospitalized, or who has even passed due to the virus. Whether that be a neighbor, friend, sibling, grandparent, child, parent, whoever – we feel the loss of their presence more today.

As a mother, I’ve had the pleasure of watching my daughter Yvette grow up and follow in the footsteps of iconic Brooklynites all the way to Congress. She is tireless in her pursuit for a fairer, more just nation. And she works so hard because, to her, our community is her family. This community is her home.

So today, on Mother’s Day, as we mourn the loved ones we’ve lost and celebrate the ones we hold dear, I encourage you to call your family, whether biological or chosen, and spend some time with them. Because together, as a community, we will get through this.
