Hi John,
To all of the moms and mom-figures reading this message, I want to take a moment to say Happy Mother's Day.
This is surely a challenging time, a weekend that many of us are forced to spend apart from our families for the first time. But I hope that you find time today to check in with those you love while practicing social distancing, whether on the phone or video chat.
I just wanted to send you a quick note about my mom. Most of you call her Mary Gay or Congresswoman, and over these past 18 months, I have never been prouder to be her daughter.
Growing up, she taught my brothers and me the importance of community service and instilled in us the obligation to leave our community better than we found it. That is a rule that has guided most of my mom's professional career as a public interest lawyer; a rule that has remained steadfast as she's navigated these challenging times in her role as Congresswoman.
At every turn over the last 18 months, my mom has always put her constituents and the country first. She's taken a hands-on approach to being a Congresswoman, putting in countless hours to dive into policy and prepare for hearings, hold community meetings and town halls, and respond to constituents' messages. She's always ready to take action when her community is in need, and most importantly, she is willing to listen.
It's hard to believe that we're gearing up for another election. Seems like just yesterday she called a family meeting and asked us our thoughts on her running for office. And you know what -- I'm so glad she decided to run. And thanks to supporters like you, she was able to cross the finish line and deliver real progress for the community we've lived in our entire lives.
But my mom can't do this alone.
