Friend,
So much of what we know about ourselves, we learn from the caretaking figures in our life. For me, one of those people is my mom.
My mom is a trailblazer.
As a journalist for Minnesota Public Radio, she interrupted a world rarely walked by women at that time. She voiced her own documentaries even when others didn’t take her seriously, served three terms on the County Board, and raised three kids along the way. She has always taught me that to know yourself is to lead yourself.
One of my favorite memories with her happened back while I was still in college. I was taking a Campaign Management class (go figure!), and as my assignment, I took up running her campaign for County Board. I didn’t have a bit of experience, but with her on my side, I wrote up a campaign manifesto, crunched the numbers, and we won—by just 95 votes!
Years later, I ran for City Council, and my mom and I got to see our names on the same ballot. We both won that night, too.
Happy Mother’s Day, Mom—and happy Mother’s Day to all the amazing caretakers out there. You make this world brighter for the people who love and rely on you.
My best,
Quinn
P.S. It’s because of my mom’s trailblazing that I have the guts to run for Congress in a district that has never elected a woman. If you want to pitch in to support my campaign, you can do that using this link. Thanks for your help!
