Dear John,

Existence celebrates motherhood. I wasn’t originally planning to release it this weekend but a friend (knowing nothing of the film) sent me a message earlier in the week that they had a dream I was releasing a movie honoring moms on Mother's Day. So here we are.

This project has been in my heart for 10 years, so it feels cathartic and somewhat surreal to reach this moment of finally releasing it. It’s a unique project for me in that it’s more of a visual poem, visceral in nature, and musically driven.

The idea for this film came from some very personal moments of deep introspection about the nature of our existence, and specifically the way in which we all come into this world completely dependent on a woman.

I have often grieved the hideous aspects of our world that are still boiling with misogyny—all the degraded ways that women are talked about, treated, and looked at—as well as my own complicity in revolting sexist behavior during my coming of age years.

I wanted to create something that reclaims the consciousness of a child, against a metaphorically organic and unpolluted canvas, and illuminates the transcendent relationship between mother and child.

Motherhood is the most beautiful thing in the world.

Happy Mother's Day from all of us at Exodus Cry and Magic Lantern Pictures!
