Hi John.

I understand Kansans are concerned about our fentanyl crisis. Far too many lives have been lost and too many families are grieving.

Republicans and Democrats have to work together to secure our border and stop dangerous cartels who are smuggling illegal drugs. We must also work with law enforcement and public health officials to save lives.

That’s why I helped secure a new $15.9 million federal grant earlier this year for our region’s law enforcement. This will help Kansas law enforcement seize illicit drugs like fentanyl, reduce violent crime associated with drug trafficking, and improve data collection — all to keep Kansans safe.

I met with the Kansas Highway Patrol and personnel at the Overland Park Police Department for an update on the issues our local law enforcement is facing. I also heard more about how they can use these new federal resources to protect our communities.

The new law enforcement funding is being made available through the Midwest High Intensity Drug Trafficking Areas (HIDTA).

HIDTA is a broad partnership between local, state, and federal law enforcement to protect our communities from illicit drugs like fentanyl. I’ve worked with both parties to support them in this important work and to address the fentanyl crisis.

I’ve also voted for bipartisan laws to hire more border patrol agents, and enhance screening at high-volume points of entry with more modern infrastructure. That includes support for another 2,000 border patrol agents and more resources for law enforcement to bring order to the border.

I was glad to lead a congressional visit to the Long Beach Container Terminal, one of the busiest ports in the nation. We met with Customs and Border Patrol agents to discuss how to prevent harmful substances like fentanyl from entering our country.

Thankfully, we’ve seen some recent signs that progress is being made. But it’s also clear there’s a lot more work to do. I’ll keep working with Republicans, Democrats, law enforcement, and anyone else I can to protect Kansas families.

My job is to serve every person and corner of our community, regardless of party. Whether we agree on every issue or not is beside the point. Everyone deserves a government that works for them – not just for special interests, big corporations, or the extremes of either party.
