Friend,

This Mother’s Day, I’m thinking about my mom, Kim Morse. She died in January of 2018, but her love continues to sustain me, every day of my life.

I’m also thinking of all the other mothers out there who make our democracy work. Mothers who teach their kids that they matter. Mothers who love their kids no matter what.

My mom didn’t have the easiest life. She grew up in a housing project. She had her first child when she was still a very young woman. Throughout adulthood, she had mental health struggles that sometimes made it hard for her to keep going.

But she lived her life as a democratic citizen in the fullest sense, which is to say, she lived her life as though her actions mattered.

When I was a kid, she ran a daycare out of our home, where kids from all backgrounds and walks of life felt welcome and loved. When she was in her 40s, she went back to school, getting an associate’s degree in Human Services and her LPN from Holyoke Community College.

My mom firmly believed that through her own small efforts, through countless untold acts of love, she could leave the world better than she found it. And that’s she did. Whatever good work I’ve done in my life bears her imprint on it.

So, to all the moms out there, and to all of you who act as motherly figures to people in your life, I thank you. These are important days for our democracy, and I firmly believe that the future we want will be shaped not by the powerful, but by everyday people who work hard, persevere, and love without reservation. People like you.
