Friend,
I just stood with Comptroller Brad Lander to make an historic announcement:
New York City will end new pension fund investments into climate-wrecking oil and gas projects in private equity funds – the nation’s first policy of its kind.
This historic win means a lot to me because I lost everything in Hurricane Sandy. I lived on Coney Island, renting a ground floor. During the storm, the water just kept coming. Almost everything I owned was damaged or destroyed.
This summer, my home island of St. Vincent was slammed by Hurricane Beryl. More people lost their homes or even lives to another storm made much worse by pollution from oil and gas.
Financing oil and gas companies only creates more destruction in places like NYC and St. Vincent – but ending new pension fund investments in greedy private equity funds like BlackRock means we’re cutting off funding for climate chaos.
At NYCC, we pushed hard to get the city’s officials to listen. We’re thrilled that Comptroller Lander is committing to New Yorkers’ to protect the planet – and our pensions – from Wall Street’s greediest vultures.
The fight isn’t over, but this is a big victory for the people. I couldn’t be happier that Comptroller Lander is stepping up.
We couldn’t have done it without supporters like you. Thank you.
In solidarity,
Michael Johnson
