Hi!
The Washington Post recently published a story that grabbed my attention:
“She’s running with all she’s got for a seat she can’t win. That’s the point.”
But what really caught my eye was the section it was in: DEMOCRACY IN AMERICA. Yep, that’s how our democracy works right now.
Kate Barr is running for a seat in the North Carolina legislature, but she already knows she’s going to lose. In fact, she introduces herself with “I’m your losing candidate for state Senate District 37.” In the Tar Heel State — and across the country — politicians are choosing their voters instead of the other way around.
And that’s because of one thing — the scourge of gerrymandering.

Last year, the North Carolina legislature enacted some of the most gerrymandered maps in the country. According to a Duke University analysis, for example, the state legislative maps allow Republicans to attain supermajorities in both chambers even in the event Democrats win statewide elections.
As Attorney General Eric Holder says: “The extreme wing of the Republican Party has grown dependent on gerrymandering. It’s become pretty clear that competitive elections just aren’t their thing.”
Fighting gerrymandering and nefarious Republicans will require investment and work for the long term — not just in the weeks leading up to Election Day.
That’s why the NDRC’s 10 Year Plan is so critical. We know that with our battle-tested strategy and team, we can protect the fair maps we have achieved, fight the ongoing attempts to gerrymander, and be ready for the redistricting fights ahead.
But we can’t do it alone. Will you chip in $30 right away to support this important work? [[link removed]]
