Environmental Services staff said goodbye to summer and hello to fall last month by hosting a litter cleanup. Volunteers from the community and City staff gathered together to remove litter from the Echo Heights Neighborhood.
In all, 43 people met at Prairie Dog Park and spilt into teams to tackle designated areas around the neighborhood. As a result of their hard work, 2,975 pounds of litter was removed!
Thank you to all volunteers and staff who participated in the Echo Heights litter cleanup! We hope to see you at the next Special Event Litter Cleanup on December 14 in Diamond Hill.

Neighborhood Litter Stomp
a success!
Keep Fort Worth Beautiful would like to thank all of our volunteers who participated in this year’s Neighborhood Litter Stomp! There was a total of 1,494 participants, including 58 organizations, 60 families, and 36 individuals. Together, over 31,300 pounds of litter were removed from 98 different locations around Fort Worth.
If you participated this year, be sure to fill out the litter wrap-up form [ [link removed] ] to report your amazing results. Don't forget to include pictures so we can spotlight your efforts.

Reducing Recycling Contamination: Insights from the MRF Audit
In September, the City of Fort Worth conducted its regular recycling audit of the Materials Recovery Facility (MRF) in Arlington. The audits are used to determine the contamination levels of residents' blue recycling carts.
These audits consist of various samplings from residential blue recycling carts and truckloads from a selection of different routes throughout the city. From these samples, items placed for recycling by residents are separated, sorted, and categorized; then thoroughly analyzed by item type, weight, volume, and other factors to determine the contamination levels.
The results from these regular audits help to identify the most common contamination, residents' recycling behaviors, and ways to prevent contamination. Recycling helps reduce landfill waste by diverting reusable materials from disposal. However, contaminated or nonacceptable items improperly placed in blue carts can damage machine equipment, contaminate other recyclables, or delay the overall recycling process. As the City works to provide more recycling services to residents, remember to recycle items properly.
Proper recycling tips:
* Recycle items from these four categories: paper, metal, plastic, and glass.
* Make sure items are clean, dry, and free of food or liquid before recycling.
* Do NOT put plastic bags in the blue recycling cart.
* Make sure items are recyclable before tossing them into the blue cart.

This month, give your food waste a spooky new life with the Residential Food Waste Composting Program.
After carving your jack-o-lanterns, compost the pumpkin scraps, guts and shell. The seeds can be composted or cooked to a tasty snack!
Don't forget those seasonal food leftovers. Toss in fruit peels, veggie scraps, coffee grounds, egg shells, and even the leftover apple cores from your Halloween party.
Fill your Halloween buckets with candy, and fill your compost buckets with nutrients!
