** Politics, politics, politics
------------------------------------------------------------
One of the things I appreciate about the Century is its breadth of content. Our articles, reviews, and poems cover topics ranging from church life to public policy to science fiction ([link removed]) to biblical scholarship to, occasionally, raising chickens ([link removed]) . But sometimes a moment calls for a more focused approach. This is one of those times, and the focus is on politics.
Just in time for a consequential election in the US, our November issue content is beginning to appear on our website. This includes a new piece from our editorial team about the importance—but not sacredness—of voting ([link removed]) . We also have an article that provides an immigrant’s perspective on the perilous state of democracy in the US ([link removed]) . Last but not least, this week we have a piece from the sourhern border that considers the ways both major political parties oppress people there ([link removed]) .
Scroll down for even more great content, like our video of the week with poet Angela Alaimo O’Donnell ([link removed]) about her new book Dear Dante, a book review about Abraham Lincoln’s approach to democracy ([link removed]) , and more.

** Voting is important. It isn’t sacred. ([link removed])
------------------------------------------------------------
“Americans often bemoan their electoral choice between ‘the lesser of two evils’ as a soul-crushing compromise, a challenge to their integrity. But why must one’s vote be so deeply felt?”
from the editors

** Can we save democracy in the United States? ([link removed])
------------------------------------------------------------
“As the United States nears its 250th year of existence, I recognize that the homeland my family escaped all those years ago is now more free and equal than the one I escaped to.”

** What does solidarity mean at the border? ([link removed])
------------------------------------------------------------
“For those on the border, this year’s US elections may be as irrelevant as the outcome of the Super Bowl.”
by Dorothee Benz
** A Lincoln parable ([link removed])
------------------------------------------------------------
“Against democracy’s 19th-century cultured despisers stands Allen Guelzo’s Lincoln, a man of modest origins, shaped by legal training and commitment to the rule of law.”
