Jake is a Special Olympics Massachusetts athlete who lives by his family’s official mantra: “Why do we fall down? So we can GET BACK UP!” Experiencing a young athlete’s worst nightmare, Jake tore his ACL, had surgery, and worked through almost a year of challenging physical therapy – all at the height of COVID-19. While he had to literally learn to walk again, he missed out on that season’s Special Olympics Unified basketball and track. But Jake never lost faith. HE GOT BACK UP! And he was there for the last game of the basketball season, when he scored a decisive basket that felt extra sweet after his long recovery. Athletes with intellectual disabilities (ID), through Special Olympics sports and community, become MORE than athletes – they become fighters, leaders, and friends. Special Olympics has helped millions of people become more independent, persistent, and confident human beings since our founding in 1968. That includes people with and without ID, athletes of all ages and abilities, and hopeful individuals waiting for their shot all over the world, including in your hometown. From our free health services and screenings to inclusive leadership programs to chances to find lifelong friends and passions, Special Olympics is more than sports.
You keep us going – thank you! The Special Olympics team
