This is serious -- the Postal Service could run out of funding as soon as September.
If the Postal Service doesn't receive emergency aid, it would have serious repercussions on our economy, our democracy, and the well-being of hundreds of thousands of workers:
The USPS employs roughly 600,000 workers, which means this crisis is inherently tied to the Dignity of Work. If the Postal Service becomes financially insolvent, those workers -- who are on the frontlines of this pandemic, delivering prescription drugs, food, and other essentials to Americans all over the country -- would be in danger of losing their jobs.
The coronavirus is forcing an important conversation about how we will vote in the upcoming elections. Voters will be risking their health if they're forced to congregate in long lines at polling places. That's why we need to expand voting by mail everywhere to ensure no one has to choose between their health and their constitutional right to vote. But if the USPS doesn't receive the aid it needs, budget cuts and service reductions could pose serious challenges to distributing mail-in ballots as well as returning them, which could effectively disenfranchise voters across the country.
Will you add your name to mine and sign our petition demanding the Trump Administration and Congress take action to save the USPS and expand voting by mail?
The fight to save the Postal Service and ensure everyone can vote by mail this year will be a tough one.
President Trump has diminished the selfless work of postal workers by calling the USPS "a joke." He's also called on Republicans to fight back against vote-by-mail efforts and perpetuated false claims about voter fraud that have been debunked by experts.
We need this entire grassroots movement to speak up and demand that the Trump Administration and Congress give emergency aid to the USPS, so we can protect hundreds of thousands of workers and secure the voting rights of Americans all over the country.
With gratitude,
Sherrod
