John,

During this uncertain time, I have witnessed amazing examples of Americans rallying together to help defeat our common enemy. Such spirit is unlike anything I have seen since 9/11. I want to take a moment to tell you about one such example.

As you may know, China has a stranglehold on our medical supply chain. Many essential items, from medicines to personal protective equipment (PPE), are manufactured almost exclusively in China. Some shipments of Chinese masks have been poorly made and had to be rejected because they didn't come close to meeting FDA standards. When we can get shipments of quality products, the prices are sky high.

Needless to say, this has put our medical professionals at risk when they need our help the most.

It is up to us to demand a change and bring the medical supply-chain back to the U.S.

Yesterday, I visited a South Carolina company that is stepping up to the plate. While not traditionally a maker of PPE, Milliken refitted their machines to make medical gowns. They purchased yarn from other South Carolina textile companies and put about 70 of their employees to work around-the-clock making millions of high quality gowns.

When FEMA started looking for sources of medical gowns for our front-line medical workers, overseas companies were poised to fill the need. However, Milliken submitted its new gowns for consideration, and I am proud to say FEMA decided to purchase 2.7 million of these high quality gowns made at a plant just miles from my home.

There are no better workers on the face of the earth than in South Carolina. I assure you that these medical gowns will be better crafted than those from overseas and will help keep our medical professionals safe.

This story is a small example of what we need on a massive scale in the United States. That's why I will be introducing legislation in the Senate next week that requires the federal government to give first consideration to purchasing American-made PPE.

If you agree with me that we need to stand up to China and bring our medical supply chain back to the U.S., please take a moment to sign this petition in support of my legislation.

Now is the time for us to act. I hope you will join me in supporting this critical effort.

Sincerely,

Lindsey Graham
