NPR: Private funding saved the 2020 election. Now, some GOP-led states are banning it

Private sector companies and nonprofit charities often donate money and provide grants to communities across the country to help administer voting.

This includes mail sorting machines in Philadelphia, nonpartisan voter registration staff in Arizona, and cameras to verify no one tampers with ballots in Bucks County, PA. Local officials have referred to this money as a "lifeline".

Now, 14 states have banned outside funding and 5 other states passed a ban that was vetoed by the Governor.
