Here's what's going on at CAI



Youth Wellness Grant: Addressing Grief and Loss Among Youth and Families of Drug Poisoning Victims


The Youth Wellness Grant (YWG) is a funding opportunity for community-based organizations in BC to develop and deliver programs that address grief, loss, and bereavement among youth and families of drug poisoning victims, and aims to restore emotional health and wellness. Non-government, not-for-profit, community-based organizations or First Nations, Métis, Inuit or urban Indigenous led organizations in BC are invited to apply for up to $80,000 in annual funding for a 3-year term.

Grantees Announced: Capacity Building Grant for First Nations, Métis, Inuit, and Urban Indigenous led Bed-based Treatment & Recovery Operators

We are pleased to announce that 11 First Nations, Métis, Inuit, and urban Indigenous led organizations have been awarded grants for capacity building initiatives within their organizations.

These grants will support operators to deliver programming that facilitates cultural healing and substance use recovery. It will also align services with the objectives of the Provincial Standards for Registered Assisted Supportive Recovery Services, and/or the Community Care and Assisted Living Act Residential Care Regulation.

Grant recipients represent health regions across the province, with 5 in Northern Health, 2 in Island Health, 1 in Fraser Health, and 3 in Interior Health:

  • Gya’ Wa’ Tlaab Healing Centre Society 
  • Letwilc Ren Semec Centre 
  • Nenqayni Wellness Centre Society 
  • North Wind Wellness Centre Society 
  • Round Lake Alcohol and Drug Treatment Society 
  • Seabird Island Band 
  • Tsow-Tun Le Lum Society 
  • We Wai Kai Nation Healing Society  
  • Wilp Si’Satxw Community Healing Centre 
  • Witset First Nation

2023 - 2024 Annual Report


CAI's 2023-2024 Annual Report is now live!

It has been a transformative year for CAI. Over the past 12 months, we have gone through a number of changes: Julia Kaisla joined CAI as the Executive Director, CAI became its own fully independent organization, and as you may have noticed, we have a new look!


Request for Expression of Interest (REOI) – Nanaimo Community Action Team

CAI invites interested and eligible organizations to submit Expressions of Interest (EOIs) in response to the provision of requirements described below. The purpose of this REOI is to identify organizations that wish to take on the responsibility for managing the funds of the Nanaimo Community Action Team (CAT).

CAI seeks an eligible organization to host and manage the funds of the Nanaimo CAT. Organizations must be a municipal government or a non-government, not-for-profit, community-based, or a First Nations, Metis,or Aboriginal-mandated organization that does their primary work in Nanaimo. Non-government, non-profit, community-based organizations must provide proof of society registration or charitable status as part of the EOI. Organizations with demonstrated experience in community engagement and collaboration, familiarity with the local landscape of substance use challenges, and proven financial accountability are encouraged to submit.

Resource: Get the facts about involuntary treatment in BC in 2024

Health Justice has put together a list of 10 facts that aims to provide basic facts from law, data, and research about involuntary treatment in BC.

In the lead up to the provincial election in 2024 there have been announcements, statements, commentary in media, and public debate about involuntary treatment for people with disabilities and mental health and substance use health issues in BC. Much of this conversation has been based on political and partisan rhetoric that is missing basic facts about BC’s current laws and the realities of involuntary treatment in this province. This fact sheet aims to provide basic facts from law, data, and research so readers can have better informed conversations about the current state of involuntary treatment in BC
