Hello Friend,

Welcome to my e-newsletter, the Ready Room. As a retired Naval Aviator, the Ready Room is special to me because it’s where fellow aviators meet to brief and debrief missions. This is my weekly briefing to you on my mission in Congress. Please follow me on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and YouTube for regular updates on how my team and I are working to serve you in Congress.

IMPORTANT VICTORY AGAINST TERRORISM FOR ISRAEL

Last week, the Israeli Defense Forces killed Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar, the man who orchestrated the October 7th attack on Israel. Yahya Sinwar's death marks an important step in the fight against terrorism. His leadership in Iran-backed Hamas and responsibility for the worst terror attack in Israeli history brought immense suffering. The successful operation by Israeli forces is a critical moment for justice, bringing a measure of closure to the victims and reaffirming the global commitment to combating terrorism. The U.S. must remain steadfast in our support of Israel, our staunch ally and the only democracy in the Middle East.

LEGISLATIVE LANDING: RECAPPING IMPORTANT INITIATIVES FROM THE 118th CONGRESS

Last week, we covered the Simplifying Grants Act, an effort I introduced to help smaller governments across the country access federal funding for critical community projects. This week, learn more about steps I've taken to ensure our veterans receive the high-quality, timely health care they've earned.

TIMELY AND TRANSPARENT VA CARE

Image

The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) currently has a standard for scheduling specialty care appointments at VA facilities and with community care providers. However, wait times are still high for veterans needing specialty treatment like mental health care. This is unacceptable. Veterans have earned their benefits, and Congress must hold the VA accountable to provide them quickly and reliably.

That’s why I introduced H.R. 7136, the SCHEDULES Act, which directs the VA to establish a set standard from the time a veteran is referred for specialty care to when care is actually provided. The bill also requires the VA to report to Congress on average wait times for veterans seeking care at VA hospitals. This report will increase transparency and include a performance ranking of VA facilities by region, helping Congress perform proper oversight. This measure was introduced in the House in February 2024 and awaits committee action. Click here to learn more.

CONSTITUENT CORNER: HONORING VIETNAM WAR HEROES

Image

Last week, I was honored to recognize 43 Vietnam Veterans at the Honoring Local Heroes Luncheon hosted by the Chamber of Commerce of Okeechobee County. Each veteran received a Vietnam Veteran Lapel Pin to commemorate their service, with an inscription on the back reading, “A Grateful Nation Thanks and Honors You!” Thank you to these brave men and women for their service and sacrifice for our nation.
