Investigating High Rates of Death for Pregnant Black Mothers and Their Babies

Black women in maternal care are disproportionately treated poorly compared to White women in the same hospitals with the same doctors. As a result, health risks are increased, including fear-based negative outcomes for Black mothers and their babies. Legislative steps are in play, and important recommendations for Black women and their allies are given.

Shoes and Socks Off: How Walking Barefoot in Nature Illuminates Your Frequency

Grounding, also known as “earthing,” is accomplished by simply taking off your shoes and socks, and strolling or standing on grass, a plot of dirt, or any other terrain in nature. Research shows that the direct connectivity between your body and the earth beneath you positively affects your mental and physical health.

LED Light Bulbs: Energy Savers That Put a Damper on Your Health

When it comes to saving energy, it’s true that using LED light bulbs win hands down over the old-style, incandescent. In fact, you’d be hard-pressed to find the old filament bulbs in any sort of local store, although you’d have better luck online. That said, the “light-emitting diode” (LEDs) with their blasts of blue light pose significant health risks, including disturbances in your circadian rhythm, sleep interference, and cancer.

During the first half of October 2024, AVFCA brought awareness to specific observance days by sharing our original stories that matched these themes:

National Produce Misting Day: ““Apeel” Fruit and Vegetable Protective Coating Is Not So Appealing When You Break It Down"

“Apeel” is a fruit and vegetable coating designed to extend the shelf life of a variety of fruit and vegetables. Questions were raised about the safety of the coating's material, which the narrative was changed on the company’s website from being unremovable to removable. Apeel is also being applied to organic certified produce. There may be health risks involved; the research is still young.  http://tinyurl.com/avfca-apeel

World Smile Day: “Fluoride From Your Water, Food, and Toothpaste May Be Disrupting Your Inner Ecosystem”

Fluoride has long been touted as beneficial to fighting cavities, so much so that it’s added to the drinking water of many municipalities. But fluoride accumulates in the body, and the long-term health effects can be damaging, including joint pain, arthritis, and lower IQ.  http://tinyurl.com/avfca-fluoride

World Arthritis Day: “A Beginner’s Reference to Magnesium: An Essential Mineral for Proper Body Functioning”

Magnesium is a mineral needed for multiple body functions. Deficiency is a problem for lots of people in the U.S.—linked to serious health issues. There are many types to choose from, so plucking a bottle off the store shelf can be confusing. Fortunately, it is also attainable through a variety of healthy foods.  http://tinyurl.com/avfca-magnesium

Our team also reads hundreds of articles each week, and those of interest are shared on our social media platforms.  However, once or twice a week, our team reads an article that is profound or shares a perspective that is new or from an expert that AVFCA feels should be highlighted.  These articles are shared on our Substack.
