HAPPY MOTHER'S DAY WEEKEND

Moms are heroes. Plain and simple. I know that’s how I feel about my mom - Susan Crenshaw. Even though my mom passed away from cancer when I was just 10 years old, the love and lessons she showered upon me growing up are still a driving force in my life. I miss her every day.

My mom faced a terrifying situation with such remarkable grace, courage, and humor - things we could all use right now. I’m proud to be her son and think about her a lot on Mother’s Day. To all the moms out there: you are the rocks in the lives of your families. You all deserve more than just one day of recognition for all that you do. I hope this Mother’s Day you are able to forget about the difficult times we are living in and remember the superheroes that you are to your families.

MOBILIZING FACE COVERINGS FOR THE COMMUNITY


 

50,000. That’s how many cloth face coverings my team bought to distribute to those who need them in our community. As you know, there is a guidance in Harris County that everyone must wear a face covering in public for the next 30 days. While I DO NOT support punishing people for not wearing a covering, I wanted to do my part to help provide coverings to people who might not have access to any face coverings.

On Thursday, my team coordinated a drive thru face covering distribution at Trini Mendenhall. It was great to see the big turnout from the community. I especially want to thank all of the awesome high school students in the Houston area for spending their Friday packaging these face coverings last week. WE NEED TO EDUCATE PEOPLE - NOT PROSECUTE THEM - TO STOP SPREAD OF COVID-19
 

People shouldn’t be afraid to be put in handcuffs for playing catch with their kid in a park. Or chased down by police boats for paddle boarding in the open ocean. Or sentenced to seven days in jail - like what happened to a salon owner in Texas - for simply trying to make a living. Yet we’ve seen these ridiculous punishments across the country as local “leaders” try to enforce social distancing orders. It must stop.

Thankfully, the Texas Supreme Court ordered the salon owner to be released from jail, and Governor Abbott banned jailing citizens for coronavirus violations. This is the right decision but similar actions need to take place across the country.

These punishments are not just. They are not reasonable. And they are not respectable. We should be educating people about how to properly risk mitigate and then TRUST the American people to stop the spread of coronavirus. That will never happen if the first instinct of power-hungry local officials is to lock people up when they are simply trying to engage in activities that were perfectly legal just a few short months ago. This week was unlike any National Nurses Week in recent memories. Our nurses - like all health care workers - are on the front lines of the battle against coronavirus. We owe them a sincere debt of gratitude for all they’re doing to serve our communities.

In honor of nurses and all of our front line health care workers, Blue Angels took to the skies over Houston on Wednesday to show their support and lift spirits on the ground. One of the Blue Angel pilots - Major Frank Zastoupil - is a graduate of Texas A&M and Kingwood High School. Thanks for making Houston proud, Frank!
