Dear John,

In today’s politically charged environment, Christians are often faced with the challenge of navigating the divisions that can polarize communities and even churches. Perhaps this is even more prevalent during election season! However, we thank God that the principles outlined in 2 Corinthians 1:12 provide valuable guidance on how Christians should engage during such times.

"We behaved in the world with simplicity and godly sincerity, not by earthly wisdom but by the grace of God" (2 Cor. 1:12).

1. Operate with simplicity and sincerity:

Christians today should strive to engage in political discourse while avoiding the temptation to manipulate facts, demonize opponents, or engage in deceptive practices. Instead, we must ensure that our words and behavior reflect the character of Christ. In a time when political discussions can become convoluted and overwhelming, Paul’s call for simplicity serves as a reminder to focus on what is essential. For Christians, this also means a constant remembering of Christ and his work on the cross and the simple obedience in the moment right before us.

2. Rely on God’s Wisdom, not earthly wisdom:

While it is important to be informed and to understand the nuances of political debates, we should be careful not to rely solely on human reasoning or partisan ideology. Instead, we must seek God’s Wisdom through the scriptures, and stand on it even if it conflicts with the world’s opinions. And we do this all by the grace of God, whose grace is sufficient for us and whose power is made perfect in weakness.

Learn about our work at the Capitol

In these politically divisive times, we recognize that human efforts alone are insufficient to bring about true and lasting change but only the grace that is found in the Gospel makes it possible. As we engage politically, let us be ambassadors of Christ’s peace and truth in the world, remembering that our ultimate allegiance is to God. New life in Christ enables us to act with love, even towards those with whom we disagree, and even as we hold fast to the truth. In doing so, we can provide a witness that transcends the divisions of the moment and points to the hope we have in God through Jesus.

The Church Ambassador Network (CAN) is an initiative of Minnesota Family Institute that brings the gospel to the often-neglected mission field of the Capitol. We connect the shepherds of God’s church to the shepherds of government so legislators will know who they are before God and see the church as a primary problem-solver in our communities. Forward this message to your pastor and encourage him to connect with CAN's ministry in St. Paul.

Yours in Christ,
