Dear A.,
Yesterday, Hezbollah attempted to assassinate Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, crashing a drone directly into his Caesarea home. The unprecedented attack is yet another significant escalation in this war by Iran and its proxy Hezbollah, which also continued to bombard Israel this weekend with more than 360 rockets and drones —

killing one Israeli and injuring at least 10.
The direct attack on Netanyahu involved three explosive drones, two of which were intercepted by Israeli helicopters. But the third drone made it through and

hit Netanyahu’s private home in Caesarea. Fortunately, Netanyahu and his wife were not home during the attack, and there were no casualties.

"This [assassination attempt] will not deter me or the State of Israel from continuing our just war against our enemies in order to secure our future," Netanyahu said in a

statement following the attack. "Israel is determined to achieve all our war objectives and change the security reality in our region for generations to come."
The IDF is continuing to make significant

progress in its war against Hezbollah. Today, Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Galant

said , "In all the places along the border that Hezbollah prepared to attack Israel, IDF fighters are now standing, and the terrorists cannot deal with them."

Yesterday, U.S. Defense Secretary Llyod Austin spoke on the phone with Gallant about regional security developments, the THAAD missile defense deployment and the attack against Netanyahu, according to a U.S.

The meeting also comes following

reports that U.S. intelligence documents related to Israel’s response were leaked to an Iranian-affiliated Telegram account. Speaker of the House Mike Johnson

Reactions to the killing of Sinwar by Palestinian and American leaders
Shortly after Hamas’ leader Yahya Sinwar — the architect of the October 7 massacre — was killed in Rafah last week, Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas’ PLO

praised Sinwar’s "martyrdom" and called him a "great national leader."

In contrast, members of Congress from both parties, as well as administration officials, praised Israel’s killing of Sinwar as a critical measure of justice for the many Israeli, Palestinian and other victims of his brutality.
President Joe Biden said in a statement, "This is a good day for Israel, for the United States, and for the world."
Speaker Johnson said, "Justice has once again been served by the brave men and women of the Israeli military."
House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries added, "Today, the State of Israel, the Middle East and the free world is a safer place with the death of Yahya Sinwar."
Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer stated, "Sinwar has the blood of countless innocents in Israel and Gaza on his hands, and the world is a much better place without him."
And Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell said, "Yahya Sinwar was the mastermind of the largest slaughter of Jews since the Holocaust, and today, families shattered on October 7th have a small measure of justice."
Meanwhile, on the ground in Gaza, following Sinwar’s death, the IDF reports that hundreds of Palestinian civilians, under IDF protection, have begun to leave combat areas toward safe zones created by Israel.

Israeli planes

dropped leaflets into southern Gaza on Saturday, showing a picture of Sinwar killed and stating that "Hamas will no longer rule Gaza." The leaflets, written in Arabic, also said, "Yahya Sinwar has ruined your lives. He hid in a dark tunnel and was eliminated when he attempted to flee in panic. Whoever lays down their weapons and hands over the hostages will be allowed to leave and live in peace."
